How It Works
Tell Us What You Need
Call (760) 382-2481 or email docs@bythepeopleusa.com with the project scope — the matter type, the documents you need, the deadline, and any templates or firm style preferences. We provide a flat-fee quote within 24 hours.
We Do the Work
Research, drafting, discovery, trial prep — whatever the scope calls for. We work from your templates and at your specific direction. Regular status updates by phone or email. You maintain full attorney oversight and review at every stage.
You Review, We Revise
Deliverables come to you for attorney review. One round of revisions is included in every quote. Final work product is ready for your signature and filing — formatted to your firm's standards and your local court's requirements.
Important: All work is performed at the specific direction of a licensed California attorney. We operate under the supervision and direction of the retaining attorney. We cannot provide legal advice, sign pleadings, or appear in court. All documents are subject to attorney review before filing. Attorney-client privilege extends to our work under the attorney work product doctrine and Evidence Code § 952.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a freelance paralegal cost in California?+
We quote flat-fee by project scope, not hourly. A straightforward motion drafting project might be a few hundred dollars; a full trial-prep engagement with discovery management will be more. You get an upfront quote before any work begins — no surprises, no billable-hour tracking, no nickel-and-diming.
Are you a licensed attorney or a paralegal?+
I am an experienced California paralegal. I work under the direction of a retaining attorney. This is the same paralegal work your firm would task to an in-house paralegal — just on a contract basis. I cannot provide legal advice, sign pleadings, or appear in court.
Can you work remotely or only in person?+
Both. I work remotely with attorneys throughout California via phone, email, secure file transfer, and cloud-based case management tools. For attorneys in Kern County, San Luis Obispo County, and Santa Barbara County, in-person meetings are available at our Ridgecrest and Arroyo Grande offices.
How fast can you turn around a project?+
Depends on scope and complexity. A routine discovery response with a 30-day deadline gets queued accordingly. An emergency ex parte motion can be turned around same-day or next-day. We'll confirm turnaround time in your quote. Rush service is available for an additional fee.
Do you have malpractice or errors-and-omissions insurance?+
Because work is performed under the direction and review of the retaining attorney, the attorney maintains professional responsibility for all final work product. We recommend you review your malpractice coverage to confirm contract paralegal work is included — it is under most California policies, but check.
How do I maintain attorney-client privilege with a contract paralegal?+
Under California Evidence Code § 952 and the attorney work product doctrine, communications with a paralegal working under the direction of an attorney are privileged. We are your agent for purposes of the attorney-client privilege. We handle all client materials on a confidential basis and are happy to execute a confidentiality agreement with your firm.
